What is Manglik?

The term Manglik comes from the term Mangal or Mars. Manglik dosa is the affliction due to the planet Mars in the married life of an individual. In the Vedic astrology scriptures it is said that when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th house with respect to Lagna or Ascendant, the Moon or Venus, the person becomes manglik. If a Manglik marries a non-Manglik, then there may be death to the other person or separation in that relationship.

From my experience as an astrologer, it is not always true that Manglik marrying a non-Manglik will lead to the separation or death of the other partner. This led me to investigate further and I have found cases (obviously from the scriptures) where this yoga is canceled even when Mars sits in the houses mentioned above. I’ll get to that discussion in the later part of the article, but for now I’d like to discuss why the houses listed above are considered bad for marriage.

1st house or Lagna is 7th of 7th. The seventh is the Lagna for the married couple and the first house is the makara house or the end of life for the married couple.

The 2nd house is the 8th house from the 7th house. As a result, it shows danger and difficulties for the couple.

The fourth house denotes domestic environments. According to the sages, the evil planet that ranks fourth or eighth in a bhava spoils the bhava. Therefore, Mars in 4 is bad with regard to the native’s health and belongings.

The seventh house shows legal servitude and the health, longevity and characteristics of the couple. So Mars in that house is not conducive to the above benefits.

The eighth house shows the difficulties of the native and the finances and fortune of the partner. The 8th house is also called Mangalya Sthana or duration of married life, so Mars is not good for married life.

The 12th house indicates the true pleasure that an individual has after marriage. The position of Mars here is not conducive to a happy married life.

When is the Manglik dosha cancelled?

  1. Mars is in Scorpio (Vrischika) or Aries (Mesha) there is no dosha
  2. Mars in the sign of Venus can’t hurt if it’s 4the gold 7the House.
  3. Mars in the sign of Mercury will have its evil protected if it is the 2n/a House.
  4. Mars has no dosha in the houses owned by the Sun, Moon and Saturn.
  5. Mars does not have a dosha if it occupies the sign of Jupiter and the house is 8the House.
  6. Mars if it joins Jupiter or Mercury loses its power does not give bad results.
  7. Mars if it joins the Moon loses its power to do evil.

Who should marry whom?

  1. If there is a Mars Dosha in the bride chart, select a groom who has a more or less similar Mars Dosha.
  2. If, in the bride’s chart, there is Mars Dosha due to its relative position counted from Lagna or Luna or Venus and there is modification due to some disposition or conjunction with the planet or modifying aspect by beneficial coincidence with that of the groom in whose chart there is also Mars dosha and also the modification.
  3. If there are no doshas at all on the bride’s chart, pair her with someone who has no doshas.
