BJJ Gi – Saddle and Back Saddle Explained

The mountain

We will first explain the mount position in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The mount is one of the trademark stances and is known to be the best stance in any Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fight. One of the things that makes this the best position is that with minimal effort you can control your opponent using your body weight. The bottom guy will usually waste all of his energy trying desperately to escape from this position. Also, in a MMA fight, with this stance you will have optimal leverage to hit your opponent and your opponent will have very little leverage to hit you. Typically, in a Jiu Jitsu match with a BJJ Gi, the riding guy goes straight for the neck with one hand and tilts his head to the opposite side to start any submission attempts.

To get the full mount position on anyone, your opponent should be on their back and you should be right on top of them with your hips on their hips and both knees on either side of their body. You should try to get as high as possible. If you stay on his hip, it will be easier for him to get out of the position with a sweep. Be careful not to go too high because that will also make it easier for you to escape. I have always been taught that being able to hold a riding position is similar to riding a horse or a bull. You must hold on and shift your body weight when necessary to stay as long as possible.

The rear mount

Back mount is another great position to have your opponent in. Again in this position with minimal effort you can control your opponent. However, with this position you don’t have as much influence on the hits as the mount. The most common submission from behind is the rear naked choke. In Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with the Gi, people are typically surprised by the flap of their gi. To get the best workout from this position, you should train this with your Bjj Gi. Your Bjj Gi will greatly help your technique for this move and allow you to learn more chokes and submissions from this position.

To fully maintain this position, you must have both hooks inside to prevent them from spinning into your guard. He must also remember not to set his hooks too deep because for the brown and black belts, his ankle will be left in a vulnerable position for a submission even though he has the dominant position. With your hands you must go through the up-down control and with the hand that is up grab the Bjj Gi flap on the opposite side. This will give you optimal control, and from here you should try to work your deliveries without giving up position.
