How to fix different types of fasteners on leather products

Fasteners are metal, leather or fabric devices used to close or lock and open leather goods. They include buckle, press studs, zippers, velcros, toggle and loop, drawstring, etc.

How to fix rivets

1. Locate and drill the correct size hole for the rivet post.

2. Insert the post through the two thicknesses of leather to be riveted on the meat side.

3. Lay the rivet and leather pieces on a hardwood board.

4. Place the cap on the grain side post.

5. Set the rivet with a mallet until the closure is complete.

How to fix buttonholes

Eyelets are used in leather goods to fasten metal key plates to key case linings, and sometimes to reinforce holes in belts and shoes.

1. Plan the layout or where the buttonholes will be placed on the part of the leather item.

2. Drill the appropriate size hole for the grommet.

3. Position or insert the grommet into the hole.

4. Lay the leather item or piece on a hard surface.

5. Hold the buttonhole setter over the buttonhole with your left hand in an upright position and strike the setter with a mallet to set.

How to fix snap buttons

The press studs are in two pairs. The first pair being a cap and eyelet and the second pair being made with a spring and post.

1. Locate and drill a hole for the grommet.

2. Insert the eyelet into the hole and place the leather on a hardwood board.

3. Place the cap, which is the concave part, on top of the buttonhole button and hammer into a clasp with a mallet.

4. Locate the hole to fix the second part on the next leather.

5. Drill an appropriately sized hole for the post.

6. Insert post and leather on a hardwood board or anvil.

7. Place the spring on the post and hammer on the snap button tool to extend the shank of the post to set.

8. Secure the two pairs by hand pressing them closed.

How to fix the zipper

The zipper can be easily fixed by hand sewing or sewing machine.

1. Cut the leather into two halves so that they are equal to the length of the zipper.

2. Open the zipper and place half of the leather on one part of the zipper and sew with the sewing machine.

3. Repeat the same process on the other part of the zip to complete the process.

How to fix buckles

Buckles attach to sandals, belts, watch straps, etc. They are fixed by eyelets, rivets or stitching.

1. Punch a hole in one end of the belt, about 4 cm from the edge.

2. Insert a buckle letting the tongue go through the hole made in the belt.

3. Create two more holes to insert rivets and hammer rivets to secure the buckle.
