Are training devices worth it?

So maybe you’ve been scouting the latest releases on the fitness device market for 2012 and you have to admit you’re impressed. Some of these items have every bell and whistle imaginable. While they are clean and modern, you can’t help but wonder if it’s worth the expense.

So are they?

Generally speaking, the answer is no. While there are some exercise machines, for example, that may be worth the investment, they simply aren’t necessary to see the results you want. In fact, most training devices do not focus on a full body workout. Most of these devices are muscle isolation devices that work on only one part of your body. Integration exercises are what you need to get fit and stay fit. There really are better and cheaper ways to improve your exercise time than investing in an expensive piece of equipment.

Unless you really want to spend money on something with bells and whistles, save your cash and consider doing these things instead:

  • Stick to the Basics: In most cases, you’ll get just as good or even better results if you stick to the basics of exercise rather than spending money on equipment. Run, walk, swim, bike, lift weights, do something, anything that is physical. If you combine those cardio activities with some good old-fashioned strength training, you’ll see results for a lot less.
  • Join a gym or fitness center: Instead of buying your own fitness equipment, use a gym or fitness center’s collection. In this way, you can take advantage of a large number of machines and devices without having to buy or maintain them all. Let someone else shoulder all the care and maintenance headaches.
  • Get a personal trainer: Instead of wasting your money on a device that may or may not work, hire a trainer or health educator to develop a program that you enjoy and can follow to achieve successful weight loss. Personal trainers can help you develop a program that is tailored to your needs and can motivate you to achieve your goals. Find someone who guarantees results.
  • Eat Right: There is no device that can replace this key component in losing weight. If you want to be truly successful, you’ll need to learn how to eat healthier. A well-balanced, calorie-conscious diet can get you where you want to go, especially when combined with a smart exercise routine. If you need nutrition education then spend your money there.

Training devices are fun and can add some excitement to a routine. However, they are not necessary to achieve your goals. Instead of wasting your money on a product that won’t help you get a true total-body workout, stick with the basics, trust some feedback from the pros, and learn how to eat better to achieve the positive changes you’re looking for. You can challenge yourself in many different ways.
