The 21st Century Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

How would someone who lived almost two centuries ago react to waking up in America today? What if that someone was the legendary Huckleberry Finn? Huck had a hard time with the social rules of his own time period, so how is he going to handle 21st century technology and transportation?

At the end of Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, readers find Huckleberry choosing between living his life and following the rules set by his Aunt Sally, or fleeing into Apache country.

Naturally, Huck chooses the easier one and explores the American Southwest. He quickly discovers that he doesn’t like hot climates.

Taking advantage of an unusual opportunity, Huck invests himself and his money in an expedition to the Arctic.

During this time, there were no successful arctic explorations. The expedition wrecks their ship and the survivors set up camp on a glacier. Exploring the area, the last thing Huck remembers is falling through the ice.

Huck wakes up some 170 years later on a table connected to various tubes and wires. A scientific team has managed to completely thaw and revive this teenager. While the medical staff dreams of how this remarkable feat will change his life, Huck dreams of his freedom and feels confined and imprisoned.

However, scientists are unaware of Huckleberry Finn’s natural abilities. Huck has never handled rules and regulations in his own time. Now it is likely that a medical team wants to continue studying it.

While moving Huck by train, he manages to escape. Life has given him a second chance and he plans to take it.

How does someone hide 170 years in the past? If anyone can succeed in this task, it’s Huckleberry Finn.

Huck quickly discovers that the world has changed during his freeze. Used to being extremely self-sufficient, survival is not difficult for Huck since he knows how to camp, fish, hunt and live in the wild. How will he stay hidden? How will he fit in?

One of the first lessons Huck must learn is that people in the 21st century wear shoes when out in public.

Huck watches three children play “rounders”, which is similar to the game of softball. Once Huck asks to join the game, he quickly learns that life in the 21st century is quite different from everyday life in the 19th century.

Huck knows that the medical team will be looking for him. This makes him adjust to this century so that he doesn’t seem different. Also, he now calls himself Mark Finn.

Dealing with cell phones, high-definition flat screens, automobiles, and teenage life in today’s world is a complete shock to Huckleberry. For the never-nervous 19th-century Huckleberry Finn, this is a challenge he fully understands.

Will he be recaptured and studied for the rest of his life as a medical experiment? How will he get along with today’s teenagers? 21st Century Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a wonderful friendship adventure.
